Geoffrey Wolff's objective and perceptive biography of Slocum should be read for a fuller understanding of Joshua's enduring gift to humanity."The Hard Way Around" is a superb account of Joshua Slocum's "passages" as a human being and sailor. In painting the arc of Joshua's life, Wolff documents the "way points" that guided Slocum to his remarkable solo circumnavigation. References are provided to guide readers wanting more detail of the life and times of Joshua Slocum. The net effect is that Wolff's narrative provides insight into the evolution and poetry of Joshua's masterpiece.Wolff shows us that Slocum is not a maritime Don Quixote or simply a teller of romantic sea tales. One of my all time favorite books is Joshua Slocum "Sailing Alone--" this book help bring the man into a better focus telling about how he got to the point that he was sailing alone--
I will read anything by and about Joshua Slocum. This was a very well done book and praise for the author. If you are a Slocum fan or a sailing fan this is great book. I loved it.
Wolff provides a solid biography of Joshua Slocum, on of my major heroes, on a par with Thoreau.
